Clean Water & Sanitation
Offuman has been battling with bad drinking water for quite a long time. Their source of water is the river that stretches and runs through 5 towns and almost 500 cottages. For villagers, the waterfront of this river is the only source for drinking, laundry, washing, and cleaning of their heavy-duty machinery including their vehicles.
During rainy seasons, pollutants from the town and streets get drained into the river making it more alkaline and sometimes toxic for consumption by any living being,
Due to the lack of clean water available for the locals, they use this toxic water for their everyday usage.
Digging a well at our school can help locals in Offuman and their children.
Harvest school has porcelain tiled toilets and a septic tank connected to it. However we don't always have access to running water at our school.
A well would solve this problem .
Harvest school was opened in 2018 and has over 50 students enrolled in kindergarten. We have a lunch program at our school which requires a clean environment, but our source of water remains a problem. Unfortunately, the farmers passing by our school ask us to give them water for irrigation from our water tank.
We understand that they come to use our water (intended for school purposes) as they can't source it from the river, which is far from the village. Our teachers protest over the usage of the water meant for the school by the farmers.
Harmattan season is the best season in Ghana to cultivate crops and vegetables. By digging a well, we can use the water to irrigate our crops. During this season regions in Offuman tend to receive less rainfall or no rainfall at all. the weather becomes dry, leading to the withering of crops, making them exceptionally hard to produce.
The contractor who builds the well installed an electric motor that draws water from the well to the storage tank, which distributes it to various areas of the school premises. The establishment of the school has already attracted people to live closer. From our experience, we know these residences will rely on our bore-well as the Government of Ghana is not able to arrange basic amenities for rural dwellers.
Breakdown of the cost for bore well quoted by the local contractor :
-
Drilling and installation of pipes costs USD $ 1500 (GH₵ 8,000) for 100 ft & below and USD $ 1900 (GH₵ 10,000) for 150 ft - 500 ft.
-
Transportation of machines from Kumasi to the village costs USD $ 220 (GH₵ 1,200).
-
The water pump costs USD $ 800 (GH₵ 4,615).
The process of the construction will be as follows :
-
Consulting the local contractor and giving them the go-ahead to construct.
-
The contractor will visit the site for inspection.
-
In the month of November, workers can start drilling, which will continue for about three days.
-
The stand will be built to keep the water tank over it.
